Journal Entry #3: Influencing Ads
Often times ads are displayed to people through various forms, whether it be in physical or virtual platforms. Often times, as you are watching videos online, ads will pop up based on the generalized population that would be watching a specific video. An example is facial care products being advertised during make-up videos. One example in which I bought products influenced by ads I saw were bioré face cleansing products. As much as people say they are not influenced by quick ads displayed to them, I had an instance where an ad made me believe in a product, and purchase a product, I knew was not of quality ingredients to begin with.
While watching various make-up videos facial cleanser products would pop up in ads throughout the whole video. I would skip the ad each time however, after seeing it various times I became interested in learning more about the product. I had heard bad reviews regarding this facial cleanser from various friends, but the ad was so compelling I wanted to try it for myself. I bought the product and got no results, confirming all the complaints I had heard from my friends. Despite me having already purchased a facial cleanser prior to viewing these ads, I felt an impulse to try this new cleanser due to the ad portrayal. The ad showed a young woman with clean and clear skin, with vibrant colors eluding to “happy” colors. This cleanser ad compelled me to buy the product because it portrayed clean skin during a make-up video, which is strategic due to the facial skin needing to be cleaned post make-up removal. I hope not to be influenced by pop up ads at random once again.
