Journal Entry #1: Scientist's Profile
Description: Develop your science profile (which should also have your professional picture), where you introduce yourself by stating your full name, where you stand academically (the college you are attending, the major you selected if any), what/who inspired your career goal (event, individual, film, documentary, book, etc.), where you want to be as a professional (how you will contribute or might already be contributing to society).
My name is Anna. I am a second semester freshman attending John Jay College of Criminal Justice. As of this moment, I am a full time student and have no job. Once I chose the school I wanted to attend, I decided to major in International Criminal Justice. My goal for the future is to become a member of the United Nations as a translator, or possibly a lawyer relating to immigrants/immigration. My father has been the most influential person in deciding the path I want to take in the working field. My father was in the army in Brasil, and has always been an advocate for justice and for making laws to protect those subject to becoming victims of crimes. My father went through great lengths and suffered for many years upon his arrival in the United States in 1989, going through discrimination and belittlement.
My father has taught me from a young age to distinguish right from wrong and to speak up for others who may not have a voice. This led me in wanting to become a lawyer for immigrants and their rights, along with being a translator whether it be professionally or to simply help others. Apart from my father’s story, I have heard many other stories of hardship and discrimination towards immigrants for various reasons, some being simply because they look different. As a professional, I want to advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves due to fear. I want for the immigrants that suffer violations of their human rights to feel protected in the country they are in. Many see immigrants as a negative addition to this country by spreading stereotypical lies and categorizing all others. I want to, if not remove, at the very least help diminish those thoughts from others, and help bring more peace of mind to the immigrants that endure discriminations and hardships in this country.
